Land Tax - Beware aggregation of land held by Trusts

On 25 February 2016, RevenueSA released revenue ruling LT 004 to publicly clarify its longstanding position with respect to the aggregation of land owned by trusts for land tax purposes.

Section 13 of the Land Tax Act 1936 (SA) sets out the circumstances where RevenueSA can aggregate the value of land held amongst one or more owners, resulting in a higher annual land tax cost.

Fringe Benefits Tax - Limiting FBT concessions on entertainment benefits - is there such a thing as a free lunch?

On 1 April 2016, the amendments in the Tax and Superannuation Laws Amendment (2015 Measures No. 5) Act 2015 (Cth) come into effect.  This coincides with the commencement of the new fringe benefits tax (FBT) year.

The Government announced the introduction of a new cap for salary sacrificed meal entertainment and entertainment facility leasing expenses (Entertainment Expenses) as part of the 2015-16 Budget.


Employment - Inappropriate email justified summary termination under the Small Business Fair Dismissal Code

The Fair Work Commission (FWC) has recently upheld an employer’s decision to summarily dismiss an employee for sending an inappropriate and offensive email about the employer to a competitor using the company email address.
