Workers’ Compensation — New ‘return to work’ framework becomes law

The time is almost upon us. As we previously informed our readership, the Return to Work Act 2014 (SA) (RWA) commences operation on 1 July 2015, replacing the current Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1986 (SA).

The commencement of the RWA brings with it sweeping changes to the South Australian workers’ compensation framework. Employers should be aware of the following changes:

SA State Budget 2015-2015 - Stamp Duty Abolition Bonanza

On 18 June 2015, the South Australian Government handed down its budget for the 2015-2016 financial year.

Surprising many, the Government has taken a progressive and aggressive stance to immediately abolish most forms of stamp duty applicable to South Australian property. Other heads of duty will be abolished over the next few years.

Employment – Increased national minimum wage and modern award rates, effective 1 July

On 1 July 2015, the national minimum wage will increase by 2.5%, to $656.90 per week (or $17.29 per hour). The national minimum wage applies to Federal system employees who are covered neither by an award nor an enterprise agreement (award/agreement free employees).

Minimum wage rates set out in all modern awards will also increase by 2.5% on 1 July 2015. Many industries throughout Australia are regulated by one or more modern awards (which number over 100).
