Congratulations to Sean Keenihan!

Norman Waterhouse wishes to congratulate our very own Chairman of Partners Mr Sean Keenihan on his appointment as Vice President of the Australia China Business Council (ACBC). Sean is “looking forward to working with all members of the ACBC, from SMEs to multinationals, in creating new opportunities for trade and commercial development between China and Australia.”

Sean will seek to leverage his national role to position South Australia at the forefront of Australia China relations particularly in the SME sector.

Congratulations also goes out to new ACBC president The Hon John Brumby, and Mr Tim Hogan-Doran as national Treasurer.

Corporate & Commercial – Release of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics’ Report on Foreign Investment in Residential Real Estate

In March this year, the Federal Government’s House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics was asked to conduct an inquiry into Australia’s foreign investment policy as it applies to residential real estate (Foreign Policy).

Currently, foreign investors are permitted to purchase new dwellings and vacant land for residential development with approval. Generally, purchasing established dwellings as investment properties or homes is not permitted. Temporary residents can apply to purchase an established dwelling to use as their residence while in Australia, but must divest themselves of the dwelling once they leave Australia.

Corporate & Commercial – New Franchising code to commence 1 January 2015

The new Franchising Code of Conduct (New Code) is set commence from 1 January 2015.

It contains a number of substantial changes which will impact how franchisors and franchisees deal with each other in franchise arrangements.

The New Code will apply to all franchise agreements entered into on or after 1 January 2015. An existing franchise agreement entered into before 1 January 2015 will not be subject to the New Code until such time that the franchise agreement is renewed.
